While in the creation stage of my product, I went through a number of different stages including planning, conducting researching about Star Wars films and their filming process, designing how I wanted my documentary to look, and finally producing my documentary. (The evidence of planning can be found in the appendix). I used the software Final Cut Pro X in order to create my documentary, and I used various clips online for the video content of my work.
Prior to creating the documentary itself, I created a script and mind map of what the content I wished to include. The mind map featured ideas I should talk about, such as “address how the game Dejarik was created through the use of stop motion photography” or “Discuss how real-life models were used to show spaceships in Star Wars films”.
Starting with the creation, I divided my research into four sections: evolution of filming, evolution of editing, evolution of special effects, and evolution of sound effects. Using this research, I created a script with this information (Appendix C), starting by talking about the evolution of filming techniques. I wrote about the cameras used to film each movie (from 1977 to 2019 episodes) and mentioned the lens type when necessary. I also included the names of the cinematographers that were in charge behind filming these movies. Many interesting points were also added to the script such as how Star Wars films introduced and popularized new and improved filming technology.
The next section I discussed was evolution of sound techniques. I wrote in my script about how the sound effect managers in charge decided to go about the editing in the movies. The first Star Wars film was revolutionary one, and was an inspiration to many upcoming science fiction films. The film ‘A New Hope’ had set many new standards and editing techniques, which are discussed in the script.
The third section written about is evolution of special effects. This topic goes into extreme depth as the film is known for its famous and innovative special effects that have taken the film industry to another level. I wrote about what techniques were used to shoot particular scenes in some earlier Star Wars films, before the use of CGI (computer generated images). These techniques were very interesting to study and provide insightful information for my documentary. I initially gathered a large amount of examples of special effects, but they were narrowed down in the script in order to make sure the documentary is not too long.
The fourth and final section explained and developed in the script is the sound effects. Star Wars filmmakers were very creative in this field, and used very unusual techniques to create sound effects in space. These effects were stated and explained in the script in order to give the audience a good understanding of the techniques used, as well as to make sure the content was up to a good level in my success criteria.
Working on the script took about a week to complete, as a large amount of planning and research involved, and I had to manage my time effectively. I had to make sure the information in my script was actually interesting and useful, therefore I removed some information. The next stage I went through was creating the actual documentary.
Creating the actual documentary was fun process as I enjoy video editing. I was able to arrange different clips into different places based on the VoiceOver. I also added in text titles to clarify what I was talking about. Many transitions were also used to make the video more smooth.
As of now, I have completed my documentary and I have uploaded it onto YouTube where it can be seen by a larger amount of people that can benefit from the information in my documentary.
